Stuck in a Creative Block? Overcome This Enemy
Getting stuck in a creative block can be a huge setback
for any artist. Besides being frustrating, creative blocks can potentially have
a damaging effect on your career. When your creativity is your livelihood and reputation,
you cannot afford a lack of good ideas and creativity.
Here are some common types of creative blocks and
solutions:
1. An Emotional Block
The intensity of being creative can leave you feeling emotionally
drained. It can be daunting when you face the unknown. It can be painful and
embarrassing to deal with your fears and can lead you to procrastinate. To
resolve this, you ultimately need to endure unpleasant emotions through methods
like meditation and routine. Get over the shock will initially feel, and start
working through things slowly, eventually picking up the pace.
2. A Mental Block
Getting trapped in your own thoughts can send you into a
block. You become locked in a particular way of thinking that you are unable to
see any other options. To get yourself out of this, you need to question
yourself and your assumptions, in order to bring about change. Change your
perspective by going somewhere new, reading, watching or listening to a
different genre, and talking to people with different views.
3. Personal Problems
Without focus, it can be difficult to be creative. If
your focus is on personal trials in your family or relationship this can take the
strain on your creativity. To resolve this, you’ll need to solve your problems
or find a coping mechanism. Reach out for help from friends, family or a professional;
take a short break from your work to regain focus while solving your problems.
Alternatively, use your creative work as an escape from the problems in your
personal life.
4. Ineffective Work Habits
Do you have set hours for certain tasks? Or does
answering emails interfere with your creative processes? Your style of working
might be conflicting with your creativity. Analyze your habits and pinpoint
where you’re going wrong. Make your habits work for your unique needs. If you
work better in the evenings, then structure your work day around that time.
Find the balance between routine and spontaneity.
5. Breakdown in Communication
Tension is inevitable when you work with a team, having a
great impact on the quality of your work. When lines of communication dissolve,
and you envision people criticizing your work, a creative block is unavoidable.
Improve your communication skills to get out of this one. Accept that you can’t
always please everyone and grow a thicker skin against rejection.
6. Not Enough
Whether it’s money, time, knowledge, equipment, contacts
or ideas, poverty can send you into a block too. The solution to this is simply
set yourself a challenge to save up, collect, learn and so on to achieve what
you can with what you have.
7. Too Much
Alternatively, a creative block can be caused by too much
of anything. An overwhelming amount of commitments, too many ideas, and too
much information can send you into creative paralysis. Cut back on your
commitments, schedule downtime, turn off your phone and distract yourself with
an outing or exercise class.
