10 Techniques to Make Your Art Projects More Interesting

Even the most talented artists get stuck in a monotonous rut. If you feel like your work is becoming stagnant and boring, try experimenting with some new techniques and materials to make your projects more interesting.
Most students tend to work with plain cartridge paper. While this white paper is so versatile, it can start becoming boring. It’s time to embrace new media, so here are 10 alternatives to make your work more interesting:

1. Colored Paper

Colored paper is a simple yet effective way to change up your style. Choose colors that will compliment your piece. A mid-tone paper with added light and dark elements can help to create a three-dimensional piece.

2. Textured Paper

Whether hand-made or machine-made, the variety of textured available can help to give your work a little spice. If you can’t find textured paper, it’s very easy to make some of your own. Why not use scrap paper to stick onto your piece for a different sort of texture.

3. Tracing Paper

An exciting alternative, tracing paper will add a translucent overlay to your piece. Try the combination of tracing paper with various inks for an exciting experiment.

4. Tissue Paper

Great for ripping, folding, scrunching and staining, tissue paper is another great option for creating texture. Try gluing tissue paper onto your work surface and painting over it for an incredible effect.

5. Textured and Patterned Wallpaper

Find patterns that won’t overpower your work but rather contribute to its feeling and intention. Perfect for collage pieces, patterned papers give your work a fun twist.

6. Newspaper Clippings

Experiment with newspaper, letting the words become an element of your drawing. If you select a clipping with legible words, ensure that words used are relevant to the overall message of your piece. Avoid any clippings that might be distracting or inappropriate to the purpose of your work. Using newspaper clipping should be an intentional decision, and be carefully considered.

7. Book Pages and Text-based Paper

As with newspaper clipping, other text-based media can give your work an interesting element. Experiment with drawing on old book pages and discarded pieces of paper to achieve a new element in your creative work.

8. Cardboard

A great replacement for painting on hardboard, cardboard is great. It provides a sturdy background for drawing or painting and can give your work mesmerizing aspects with sections cut out. It is also ideal for creating elevated surfaces and depth within your piece.

9. Linen, Canvas, and Fabric

Stretched canvas is a popular option for painting, but consider using sections of fabric in your works in a different way. Stick fabric pieces onto paper for a textured effect. Use a plain piece of canvas or linen and fray the edges to add an interesting element to your painting.

10. Modelling Compounds

An unusual option is modeling compounds. Create thicker, sculptural elements for your artwork. It’s great for creating uniquely shaped surfaces to simply scratch out your artwork, paint on it, or press items into the compound for an interesting piece.
